LET’S GET YOUR HOME STORM-READY

It’s the time of year when we get rainstorms. But with our hints and tips you can help protect your home from flooding.

  1. Check your home and garden drains
Take a few minutes to check the drains around your home
and garden. Are they clear from leaves and other waste?
If they’re blocked, the rain won’t drain away.
  2. How about roadside drains?
If it’s safe to do so, check any roadside drains outside
your home too. If these are blocked, any storms could
cause flooding. Try and clear any rubbish or leaves if
    you can.
  3. Do you have a garden water butt?
An empty water butt can collect more rainwater. So give
your garden a treat and use its contents now – you’ll stop
too much water going into your drains when it rains.

Most local floods are caused by rainwater. This will go down over time and you won’t need to call anyone. You can find out about the other types of floods and where to get help on the other side of this leaflet or on our website (stwater.co.uk/flooding).

WHO TO CONTACT IF YOU SEE FLOODING

It can be tricky to know who to contact in an emergency, so follow this simple guide to make sure you get the right help during a flood.

Floods caused by rainwater
Unless it’s on a road (see below) you normally don’t need to call anyone if you see a flood that’s just rainwater. It’ll drain away once it stops raining.

Flooded roads
For local roads, call your local council as they look after roadside drains. If it’s a larger road, call National Highways on 0300 123 5000.

Rivers and streams
For flooded streams and minor river flooding, call your local council. For major river floods – if a river has broken its banks it’s a major river flood – call the Environment Agency on 0345 988 1188.

Sewer flooding
This is when you need to contact us. If you see sewer contents flooding from a manhole, call Severn Trent straight away on 0800 783 4444.

Help us to help you
When rainstorms hit, we’ll all be working hard to protect our local communities. Please help by making sure you contact the right agency and only calling when you need to. Thank you.
